About the library

Clayton Library is located in Houston’s Museum District close to Herman Park. There are four buildings on the property: the Main Building, which houses the research collection, the Clayton House, the Carriage House, and the Guest House. When you pull into the parking lot the Main Building is located to the left, the historic houses to the right.

At Clayton Library we do have free parking available for users of the library. Lockers are available to place belongings in for the day. To rent a locker you will need a quarter which will be returned when you return the key. A snack area is available with vending machines and tables if you would like to take a break. We ask that all food and drink be consumed in the snack bar or patio. You are welcome to bring your lunch or you can visit one of the local restuarants. Free Wi-Fi is available inside the library and you are welcome to bring in your laptop and connect to the Internet. Public computers are available for research, you will need a Houston Public Library PowerCard or computer use card to access these.


Items to bring:

  • Information about the family you will be researching that day.
  • Houston Public Library PowerCard or photo ID if you would like a library card
  • Sweater or jacket (it is often chilly)
  • Small bills for copies (we are unable to provide change)
  • Flash drive (saving from computer or microfilm is free)
  • Notebook or paper to take notes on
